Wild: "Greg" outs Cheryl

Roger Carpenter, the real life version of "Greg" from Cheryl Strayed's "Wild," just inadvertently discredited Strayed's own account of her actions.

I feel kind of bad for the guy. He certainly is taking great pride in being associated with Strayed and her book and is enjoying a certain level of notoriety because of it. I think he honestly likes Cheryl a lot and is eager to help her in any way he can. Sadly, he seems to have unwittingly given us the smoking gun that proves a good part of Strayed's story was at minimum, embellished and at most, fabricated.

Read his story on the PCTA website. Carpenter talks about coming across Strayed on the trail near Spanish Needle Creek. He states "Cheryl had a huge, heavy backpack, the now famous “Monster,” and was taking down a spacious dome tent." Now he didn't have to say anything about the tent, but he was very clear as it must have made an impression on him.

Go and Google "spacious dome tent," "dome tent," and "north face dome tent."

Now compare those images with the photo of the tent Strayed says she used:

Cheryl asserts this is the tent she used and that this is a photo of her on the trail. She has the Bob Marley t-shirt she supposedly received and lost while on the trail. She says she still has the tent. So why isnt this a "spacious dome tent?" Does that look like a "spacious dome tent?" Would anyone describe that as a "spacious dome tent?" The answer is "no" in case you weren't sure.

BTW, who took this photo? She could not have gotten framing like this if she had used her "tiny tripod" and set her camera's timer, you would be able to see more ground. This was handheld by someone. To me it appears that the bottom half may have even been cropped out. Why? was someone else's gear lying there? Why are some of her photos from the trail in color and some in black & white? Why is she wearing sandals and not flip-flops like she described? Does that backpack look like a Monster to you? Why are there so few photos from her trip? Why are there so many questions about something so simple?

The reason?

Because the photo above was not taken during the brief period Strayed was actually on the trail. I think Strayed did hike and backpack for awhile and did indeed meet Greg where she says she did, but this photo was NOT taken during that time. It's my belief this was taken by a boyfriend, or maybe even Paul, while Strayed was camping sometime either before or after the period she claims to have been hiking. This was one of the only photos she has of her at a campsite, so she had to weave it into the story and of course that shirt had to disappear while she was on the trail, as it belonged to whoever she was camping with.

In fact, I will go so far as to say I think EVERY photo of Strayed posted by her of her, was taken by either Paul or another beau on camping trips BEFORE she set out on the PCT. This also explains why she's continues to contradict herself in how much backpacking experience she had before the PCT hike. I think she and Paul DID go backpacking and camping, but she couldn't say that in the book, because that would contravene her narrative of being hapless and helpless when she started. She needed to "overcome" her weaknesses and grow stronger on the trail. She couldn't do that if she was already out there running around with a backpack on. Real-life Cheryl had a rough idea of what she was doing, fictional Cheryl did not. Strayed is now confusing the two and doesn't understand why everyone else is just as confused.

Were these photos "selfies" taken with a tiny tripod? FYI, all color photos seem to show the "Starved" necklace while none of the B&Ws do.

Well, to me almost nothing more needs to be said. Someone isn't telling the truth. Oh don't worry, I'll continue to document these little slip-ups and inconsistencies and soon I'll start making my way back through the book.

See you soon!

  1. I had an entire post about the tent and it just disappeared. FML
I will attempt to recreate my eaten comment.
The tent in Cheryl's pics is a bright yellow, North Face Mountain 25 dome tent. If you colorize that pic and use Monster's blue from other pics and green for the trees and other easy to match colors, we can see the tent is bright yellow. I then no the black and white pics are on purpose.
The following patents support what I am about to assert. I include them as evidence.
Patent number 5,197,504 was granted to Howe (tent God who designed the tent in Cheryl's picture) on March 30, 1993.

Patent number 5,404,896 was granted to Howe on April 11,1995.
    Why do these matter?
    1. The tent in Cheryl's above shown picture is an NF Mountain 25. It is described on multiple sites as a "spacious dome tent".
    2. Patent number 5197504 details the O Ring distribution and pole array used on the Mountain 25.
    3. Patent number 5404896 is the TENT patent detailing the D Ring pole path with ten supportive poles with a flex sheet barrier and rain fly with awning (which has its own patent FILED as an addendum piece in July of 95). Patent pending in 896 was FILED on June 24, 1994.
    4. Howe shares in multiple sources that he designed this tent in 1995 using the patented inventions that made it a top notch tent for long distance hikers.
    5. A tent similar to this design, but missing the ten pole system was available on the market by REI in 1994-1995. It was not produced in Bright Yellow. It also did not have a sleeve guided pole system, but a c-ring hook system on flexible poles.
    What does that mean?
The tent in Cheryl's picture was invented, literally invented and designed in 1995, with patent evidence. If something is invented and patented in a calender year, it's virtually impossible for it to he mass distributed for retail sales at a chain like REI that same year. But, we are supposed to believe that tent purchased by Cheryl in May of 1995, or up to three months prior, was the same tent that hadn't been fully realized or patented yet? REI did market that that tent as a first run in July of 1995. But, wasn't Cheryl on the trail then? REI sold the tent in Cheryl's picture for between $900 and $1300. How did a broke waitress with a drug habit find the money?

My guess is that Greg did see Cheryl in the 93-94 version of this tent. I don't think he would lie. And, I think people attested that you could by this tent in 95 without really thinking about the timing. I think Cheryl bought the tent pictured above AFTER the hike and staged photos. Since Cheryl was so fastidious of reminding us about the OJ Simpson trial, I will pull an analogy: if the tent sleeve don't fit, you must call bullshit.

  2. Also, why the fuck is her hair SHORTER in the Bob Marley/STARVED pics and longer in the earlier, pearl necklace pics? Did she stop for a jaunty little hair cut midway? I know no hiker that prefers hair in the face as opposed to letting it grow out so you can ponytail it.

  3. Argh! So I'm wrong? Damnit. I have to admit that does look like the NF Mountain 25. How is that a "spacious dome tent" though? Looks like she might not have it up all the way.

Thank you very much for those points though!! I think either way there are definitely questions about the veracity of her tail.

I also thought there was something odd about her hair but I couldt quite put my finger on it.

  4. I think you need to google "TNF Lunar Light", the door is the same, the roof is solid and the netting is on the side. In Cheryl's picture you can see through the netting to the trees behind the tent, but not the upper part of the tent. The Lunar light was reviewed in a 1995 edition of backpacker magazine, so it appears it was on the market in 1995. The Backpacker article is called "Tents for the Frugal" so I doubt the Lunar Light was in the $900 range. It also had the quick-pitch system, as noted in the backpacker story.

    1. Then we're back to the "spacious dome tent" issue. Roger's tent was almost the same size as the TNF Lunar Light. No reason for him to have made a comment.

  5. Something else you might want to check out; take a look at the comments on the "I am Greg" post on Cheryl's FB page, the comment that comes up on top is by "Chris Wood" who mentions meeting Cheryl when he and his wife hiked in '95, then there are comments by Roger Carpenter regarding the hiking in '95. Apparently Mr and Mrs Wood hiked all but 200 miles in '95, and met Cheryl along the way. If you go to his FB page you can see pictures from his hike, including one with Cheryl in it, and another one with a lady and a llama. Interesting...

    1. Yes, I'm aware of all of those. No one is saying that Strayed didnt hike some of the PCT. There are a small handful of photos of her in campgrounds, but none of her on the trail with anything recognizable from the PCT or showing her with another person. Look at the Wood's photos, then look at Carpenter's photos, then look at Strayed's. Notice the striking and stark contrast between her photos and others'??

As a matter of fact, I'm struck by how plump Strayed looks in Wood's photo given how far she is into the hike at that point. Not to mention how unbelievably clean her white t-shirt is. Yet again, it's a photo in which she appears to have stepped right out of a Subaru into a campground.

The photo of the llama is actually indicting. I never had a problem with the llama story (really) until now. Now we have some evidence someone told her about a llama on the trail, so she through it into her "memoir".

    2. I'm not saying I believe every word of her book, but I believe she did hike a lot of what she said she hiked...there are a number of observations I've made for myself that ring true rather than false, and I am very familiar with the trail. Greg made the comment about the tent, not Cheryl, so why he described it that way is only known to him. I think all of the hikers in the group photo look rather clean, if this is a resupply stop I would expect they all showered and are in their town clothes or their washed hiking clothes. As far as the Llama picture it could also prove that Mr Wood met the lady with the llama and Cheryl met the lady with the llama because she was hiking the same trail.
In any quest for truth you must be open to the possibility that the truth may not turn out to be what you want it to be. Good luck with your quest, I'm moving on.

    3. I think that's best. If you are on a "quest for the truth" then you cant be in a position where you are making excuses and bending over backwards playing "intellectual contortionist" to justify what doesn't make sense.

    4. Delayed response but...LOL

As a long time online political commentator, I'm struck by the similarity between Strayed's followers and dedicated Fox News viewers. Neither can be bothered to actually hold a conversation about a particular topic. A standard tactic is to drop a "bomb" then leave so none of the blow-back can hit you, which is what TamiJo just did. "I'm moving on" because if I stay you might prove that I'm wrong. I also love the anecdotal assertions. Everyone and their brother now seems to be "very familiar" with the PCT.
